SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2019, the Hy-Vee/Sanford Legends events set a new profit record with $255,000 raised for local youth sports organizations. This year’s total pushes the amount donated since 2005 to $2.35 million.
The Hy-Vee/Sanford Legends events provide learning opportunities for young student-athletes to grow and be inspired by providing different sporting clinics and camps. Each year, celebrity athletes are brought to Sioux Falls who represent the Legends goals and values—quality, integrity and character.
Records set at 2019 Legends events include the following:
- Free Legends Clinics (12) 3,761
- Legends Banquet 1,047
- Legends Golf Tournament 472
More than 150 clubs and other golf items were collected and donated to the First Tee.
The $255,000 will support the Legends scholarship program, the Legends Foundation for Youth Grant Program and the Folds of Honor Grant.
Youth sports organizations are encouraged to apply for upcoming grants by Aug. 23. Priority is given to projects and organizations that have substantial volunteer involvement and missions that support those of Legends. The registration form is available at legendsforkids.org.
Continuing in 2019 was the Legends for Kids Scholarship, which was developed to honor graduating high school seniors for exceptional character in leadership in athletics and school involvement. The scholarship program was created by Hy-Vee, Sanford Health and First PREMIER with support from Argus Leader Media and KELOLAND Media Group.
The program handed out nine $5,000 scholarships in 2019 and will award 10 scholarships in 2020. Recipients must use the scholarships for post-secondary education. Nominations for the 2020 scholarship program can be made by coaches, teachers and administrators from Sept. 2 to Nov. 15. Nomination forms will be available on legendsforkids.org.
The 2020 Hy-Vee/Sanford Legends events are scheduled for June 11-13 with the Legends Football Camp scheduled for June 22-24. One new free clinic has been added to the Legends list of events in 2020. A rugby clinic will take place at the Sanford Sports Complex.
